I do multi-level archiving (daily/weekly/monthly/yearly). Recently I decided to switch from a tape drive to a USB drive. With tape I had to do the rotations manually. With the USB drive I wanted software to do it for me. 
A web search turned up only one product which would do the job: Relative Rev Backup from DataMills. After a full backup only incrementals were needed. This minimizes the backup space and time. But could they handle the deletion of intermediate incrementals while still allowing a full restore at any of the rotation dates?

Yes! RRB handles this and other problematic issues like directories which are deleted after the initial full backup and missed backups - and they do it all automatically. The user interface is straightforward. It is also easy to search for all versions of a particular file and choose one to restore.
